As many of you know, I love reading the articles over on Business on Main. They have excellent stuff over there. I would definitely recommend checking it out. I was reading an article on the freelance economy and it struck me that the traditional business model is dead.
The term free agent (or freelance economy) was noticed by Daniel Pink in his book Free Agent Nation. In the article Daniel talks about
Pink says “the causes [of free agency] identified in the book haven’t disappeared,” but rather have “intensified.” Pink believes there’s been some improvement in the infrastructure for the free agent. He cites a “big change” in our abilities to collaborate, saying, “It’s become much easier for people in far-flung locales to work together on projects.”
It has become much easier for people in far-flung locales to work together on projects. We are talking about the true definition of collaboration. You can see this intesity with the launch of sites like 99Designs and Hatchwise.
This is not only being discovered in the small business world… but also in the corporate world. Digitized collaboration has become a must have for younger (and even older) employees in the job market.
Social media and the Internet have enhanced the global more and changed the traditional business model forever. With that change, comes more competition and a more difficult job market.

I believe digital collaboration will help businesses who engage in it, stand out from their competition. Being able to hire from a global talent pool vs. just a local pool will help your business find better people.

I'm not sure your post matches your title.
This really doesn't have much to do with the traditional "business model" – but rather the thought that freelanced support can fulfill once internal positions.
And I don't think that's accurate either. Freelancers have always been part of the equation – the pool of available workers is just much larger now, and management costs have come down. But those management costs are real – and freelance workers come with their own set of challenges. There will always be a need for growing & successful businesses to internalize staff.

It seems like social media can help and hurt businesses. It is a great way to connect with people, but at the same time, they can spread negative comments like wild fire.

They say as China catches up economically, prices will go up and then we’ll be able to compete again.

Interesting food for thought Kyle! Do you think the way we conduct business will continue to be restsructered as the shape of social media and technology changes? Or do you think will reach a point where the influence of social media/technology will reach it’s peak? I would tend to believe technological advancements will always play a role but perhaps business will find a way to manage social media/networking expressly to their benefit.
